How online prescription renewals work

An FM Med online renewal starts with information you supply about your existing treatment. You personally check and submit the request, follow the existing payment steps, and a doctor independently reviews it. If approved, the prescription goes directly to your selected pharmacy. The renewal service costs R258.

What should I do before starting?

Make sure you are asking about existing stable chronic treatment. Have your current medication information and pharmacy details available. If there is a new symptom or concern, read the consultation and renewal comparison first.

What are the steps?

  1. Open the existing renewal form. Use FM Med’s prescription-renewal form. This guide is not an application.
  2. Enter your information. Complete the requested personal, contact and medical details and list the treatment you already use. Include relevant changes and allergies.
  3. Select your pharmacy. Check the branch and email details. An approved prescription will be sent there.
  4. Review and submit personally. Check every field, read the declaration and confirm the information is true. Complete the existing secure payment steps when prompted.
  5. Allow independent doctor review. A registered South African medical doctor decides whether online renewal is appropriate. Further questions or another type of assessment may be necessary.
  6. Follow the next step you receive. If approved, the prescription is sent to the chosen pharmacy. If the request is unsuitable, follow the doctor’s advice about further assessment.

What if I do not know a medicine detail?

Check your own prescription or labelled packaging rather than inventing a name, strength or instruction. If information remains unclear, explain that in your notes or contact support for help using the service. Administrative help cannot decide what treatment you need.

Does payment mean the request has been approved?

No. Submission and payment do not guarantee a prescription. Do not interpret a payment confirmation as the doctor’s clinical decision. Read the existing FAQ for payment queries and avoid sending duplicate requests while waiting for an update.

Important service limitations

Every request is independently reviewed by a registered South African medical doctor. Submission and payment do not guarantee that a prescription will be issued. Schedule 6 medication is excluded from the online service.

FM Med is not an emergency service. Requests needing examination, urgent treatment or in-person assessment must be redirected to appropriate care. Do not wait for an online response if urgent care is needed.

Choose the appropriate next step

FM Med’s online services are available throughout South Africa. Use the prescription-renewal form — R258 for qualifying stable chronic treatment. For a new symptom, new concern or fuller assessment, use the online consultation form — R320.

Approved prescriptions are sent directly to your selected pharmacy. Read the existing patient FAQ and terms and conditions. You must personally check the application, confirm the declaration and submit the request.
